In 2009 I read "The Hobbit" for the first time since childhood. I am an avid Tolkien fan, but had left that book lost in childhood memories for many years. I was struck by the profound messages in "The Hobbit", at least the way I interpreted them, and was inspired to write the song "Greater Than Gold" about what I saw them to be; innocence and purity of heart triumphing over greed in it's various characters and forms.

Over the Mountain, far from my home
What I have given to seek out this gold
Dark paths and danger, but company kept
My heart the stranger, ‘till first dawn I left
